Gene Wilson Obituary

Roanoke ~ Donald Gene Wilson known as “Shooter” or “Crapshooter”, 78, was born and raised in Wellington, Kansas on April 11, 1941 and hitched a ride on the Peterbilt to heaven at Baylor Scott and White on March 21, 2020 in Grapevine, Texas.

Funeral is 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2020 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd with burial in Boyd Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Shooter spent most of his time living in both Irving and Boyd, Texas and driving trucks for either himself, as a business owner or for others, after the down turn in the mid-80’s. Shooter didn’t just drive a truck, he spent a little time working as a welder in Decatur and running a machine shop in the shop at his house north of Boyd.

A long list of friends know Shooter best for playing “3 Ball” at Cactus Jacks, sneaking shot glasses out of the bar in his boots and perpetually spending money on boats that rarely ran once you got to the middle of Lake Bridgeport. Just about everyone knew he could never actually tell a joke, because he couldn’t stop laughing at himself long enough to get it out. He loved going to car shows and working on the cars he’d take to them.

There have been several “Mrs. Wilsons” over the years, but the most notable are Pattie, whom he was married to for almost two decades and Soretha, who stuck by him for even longer. If Shooter were here today, he’d be the first to tell you he’s shocked he outlived either one of them and if we’re being honest, we are too.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Soretha Wilson.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter, Brandy Darby and husband Chuck of Teasdale, Mississippi; son, Brad Wilson and wife Judi of Roanoke; 3 grandchildren, Jerrett, Payten, and Nathan; other relatives and a host of friends.
