Bert Caraway

Bert Caraway, 87, a lifetime resident of Decatur entered his eternal home Monday, October 18, 2021.

Memorial is 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Decatur. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

Rev. Donny Haywood will officiate.

Bert was born June 29, 1934 to James Monroe and Callie Francis Caraway in Decatur, Texas. He was the beloved husband of Virginia Condor Caraway for 56 years.

Bert was a dedicated family man and trusted friend to many.  We will miss the twinkle in his eye and his contagious laugh.  He will be remembered for his countless acts of genuine kindness and generosity.   If somebody needed a helping hand, Bert would always be there.  He loved his family more than anything.  Pawpaw cared deeply for his grandkids, and they knew it.  He taught us the importance of a strong work ethic with his impressive garden of many years.   He also showed us a zest for life and travels that landed him in thirty-three countries.

He graduated Decatur High School in 1952.  Bert proudly served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Princeton, CVS 37.  Bert retired to his beloved garden after many years as a carpenter. He was a member of FUMC of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Callie Caraway; his sister, Shirley Foster, and brother, Gene Edwin Caraway.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Virginia Caraway of Decatur; his daughter, Wyatta Duffy and husband Brian of Gainesville; his son, Monty Caraway and wife Carrie of Decatur; 9 grandchildren, Sean Duffy, Joshua Duffy, Andrew Duffy, Emilee Caraway, Lance Caraway, Devon Duffy,  Cyleigh Duffy, Natalee Caraway, and Elyssa Duffy; his brother, Kenneth Caraway of Decatur; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
