Travis was born on September 12, 1935 to Benjamine Franklin and Modena (Lovejoy) Roberts in Chico, Texas. He was united in marriage to Marguarette Alice Dukes on August 18, 1983 in Corpus Christie, Texas. Travis lived in Decatur until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served 2 years stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas and was Honorably discharged in 1960. Travis operated 3 Chevron gas stations until 1970 when he accepted a job with James A. Cardwell and Gilbert “Rip” Russell. Together they owned a corporation that operated a Chevron truck terminal. The corporation experienced growth and expanded into ownership of Arrow Building Corp, C&R Distributing, El Paso Thermo King, El Paso Truck Center, a chain of Piggy Bank Gas Stations in 2 states, Royal Crown Auto Car Washes, and C&R Unattended Auto Fuels. In 1975 a completely new concept of travel centers was designed and the first one was built in El Paso. It became the crown jewel of all auto truck facilities. Today Petro Travel Centers are a chain that serves the United States coast to coast. Travis retired in 2002 as Vice President and moved back home to Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry Don Roberts.
