Roy Arthor Steel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community leader, passed away on April 21, 2026, in Denton, Texas. Born on December 22, 1942, in McAlester, Oklahoma, Roy lived a life marked by dedication, service, and heartfelt commitment to his family and his community.
Roy's journey was one of strong work ethic and service, beginning with his honorable retirement from the United States Army. Following his military career, he ventured into various occupations, including his notable roles at Centel Telephone Company, as well as his work in hay baling, farming, and ranching. His industrious spirit and unwavering perseverance made him a respected figure in every field he touched.
A man devoted to his community, Roy actively contributed to numerous organizations. He was a valued member of the Fort Worth Anglers' Club and the Texas Baptist Men's Ministry, where he brought both passion and leadership. His civic engagement extended into local governance as part of the Paradise City Council, and he proudly served as the Mayor of Paradise. Roy also played an important role in the Economic Development Corporation, always striving to enhance the prosperity and well-being of his beloved hometown.
At the heart of Roy’s life was his cherished family. He is survived by his loving wife, Pat Steel of Paradise, who stood by his side through every chapter. His daughter, Cindy Staley, and husband Doug of Paradise, carry forward his legacy with grace. Roy also leaves behind several devoted grandchildren: Ashley Markum and husband Chase of Paradise, Heather McKenzie and husband Cody of Weatherford, as well as four great-grandchildren—Zell Markum, Malia Markum, Taylor McKenzie, and Ty McKenzie—who brought immeasurable joy to his later years. His sister Connie Fretwell and husband Wendell of Canton remain a steadfast part of his family circle, keeping close the memory of Roy’s warmth and kindness. Numerous nieces and nephews continue to honor his memory and hold him dear.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Jewel (Johnson) Steel, and siblings Rathine Moore, Winnie McGuire, Charles Henry Steel, Violet Sherbert, and Hazel Payne.
The community is invited to honor Roy’s life during the visitation on April 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hawkins Funeral Home, located at 1909 9th St, Bridgeport, Texas. The funeral service will be held the following day, April 28, at 2:00 PM at the funeral home with burial at Paradise Cemetery. Wise County Veterans Group will provide Military Honors.
Roy Arthor Steel’s life was a testament to dedication—to his country, his community, and above all, his family. His legacy echoes in the lives he touched and in the heart of Paradise, a town forever marked by his leadership and love. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and lovingly honored by all who knew him.
