Judy Kay Byrd

Judy Kay Byrd, 75, of Springtown, Texas, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in Bridgeport, Texas, and went home to be with her Lord.

Judy was born February 5, 1951, in Sherman, Texas, to Louie and Louise (Morrow) McDonnell. She graduated from Keller High School and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cottondale, where her faith was an important part of her life.

On January 14, 1981, Judy married the love of her life, Samuel Thomas “Sammy” Byrd, in Keller, Texas. Their love was truly special, and they were soulmates. Together, they made their home in Springtown, where Judy spent 25 years enjoying the slower, simpler life they had dreamed of, including a little farming and plenty of time together.

Judy loved knitting, shopping, and especially baking. If you ever walked into Judy’s home, there was a good chance you would find a homemade loaf of warm bread waiting for you. She also made wonderful pies and desserts. And, of course, there was her Dr. Pepper. Judy rarely went anywhere without one, and those who knew her best can probably picture her with one in her hand.

Judy was a woman of faith who loved the Lord and her family deeply. She will be remembered for her love of family, her time spent in the kitchen, her homemade treats, and the many memories made together.

Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel “Sammy” Byrd; her daughter, Lori McKinney; her parents, Louie and Louise McDonnell; and her grandchildren, Jason, Kayden, Trinity, Randall, and Blake McKinney.

Those left to cherish Judy’s memory include her sister, Linda Keel and husband Edsel; her grandchildren, Lauren and husband Dustin Walker, Brittany Null, Chase Gardner, Christian and wife Mackenzie McKinney, Brenden and wife Kaylee McKinney, Jennessa and Kaylee McKinney; her great-grandchildren, Addyson and Sylvia Walker, Harrison Newman and Brycelyn McKinney, and Emilia Gardner; her stepchildren and step grandchildren, Lisa Chasteen, Mark, Catelyn, and Samantha Byrd; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Judy is now reunited with Sammy, the love of her life, and resting peacefully with the Lord.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2026, at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur, Texas. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Private graveside service for immediate family will follow at Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery.

Pastor Charles Pugh will officiate. Pallbearers will be Christian and Brenden McKinney, Chase Gardner, Mark Byrd, Dustin Walker, and Gary Null.
