Joy was born in January of 1931, to Barney and Mary Alma Gose Mecaskey in San Jon, New Mexico. Joy's family roots were in Wise County. She was a descendent of the Gose family which settled in Wise County in the 1850s. Joy graduated from Decatur High School in 1947, and attended Decatur Baptist College for two years.
