Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the First Baptist Church of Decatur with Rev. Ken May and Rev. Gerre Joiner officiating. Burial will follow after the service at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.
Pallbearers include Martin Woodruff, Tim Woodruff, Mason Woodruff, Melton Cude, Chance Overton, Gavin Cole and John Tomme. Honorary pallbearers are Sammy Renshaw, J.E. Carson, Dr. W.M. Lewis, Franklin Meador, Manshadow Waylett, and Murray Cude.
Janice was born January 5, 1924 to Charles and Hattie (Boyd) Mann in Artesia, New Mexico. She married Charles Thomas Gettys on June 14, 1947 in Artesia, New Mexico. They made their home in Decatur, Texas and celebrated 60 years together until his passing in 2007. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University and first worked as a Laboratory Technician for Baylor Hospital in Dallas. She took time off from work to raise her children and then began teaching school in Bridgeport. After 19 years in education she retired from Decatur ISD. She was an active member of Decatur Women's Club and is a past president. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, was a devout Sunday school teacher there, and helped organize the church's daycare program.
Left behind to cherish her memory are son, Ronald Thomas Gettys of Decatur; 2 daughters, Charlotte Meador and husband Franklin of Decatur, Leisa Waylett and husband Manshadow of Decatur; five granddaughters, Shauna Tomme, Eryn Gettys, Sterling Cole, LeaAnn Meador, Kara Overton; 1 grandson, Chance Overton; 5 great grandchildren, Triston Minihan, Matthew Tomme, Owen Cole, Nathan Cole, and Gracen Cole; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters; and her husband.
