Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4th at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel with Drs. Van Gardner and Bill Hughes officiating. Interment: Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.
Pallbearers include Ray Peel, Michael Vess, Peyton Vess, John L. Lewis, Stanley Kemp, Kenneth Peel and Stephen Hunt.
Boots was born August 3, 1932 in Amherstdale, West Virginia to the late Millard and Georgia (Waugh) Browning. She was united in marriage to Johnny Martin Lewis on January 28, 1950 in Phoenix City, Alabama and was married 61 years at his death on June 16, 2009. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Euel, Bert and Aubrey Browning; her sisters, Betty Bartlett and Marlene Kilgore; three nephews, Robert Browning, Kim Kilgore and Tim Bartlett.
At a young age, Boots helped her Grandmother run a boarding house which started her service of serving others. Boots enjoyed serving at different church camps for 50+ years and volunteering where needed. She has donated 15 gallons of blood through the American Red Cross.
Boots had been President of the Wise Regional Health System Auxiliary, President of the American Red Cross in Virginia and Florida, Commander of the DAV Women's Chapter in Decatur, President of the Old Man High School Alumni Class of 1950, a member of the Eastern Star Chapter in Decatur for 25 years, a member of the Decatur Women's Club; and a member of the Wise County Rock and Fossil Club in Decatur. Boots was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Decatur and was a past member of Becco Baptist Church in Amherstdale, West Virginia.
Boots found joy in singing at church and serving her family with support and love. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family whose lives she touched.
Left behind to cherish her memories are her son, John L. Lewis of Decatur; her daughter, Leah Lewis of Decatur; two grandchildren, Jenny Vess and husband Michael of Boyd, Ray Peel and wife Kristy of Midlothian; great-grandchildren, Arianna and Peyton Vess of Boyd, Macie, Trapper and Rachael Peel of Midlothian; special daughter, Renee Workman of Huntington, West Virginia; special brother-in-law, Jim Bartlett of Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
