Charlotte Avis Garret Matzinger, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at her home of 54 years in Cedar Park, Texas, on Friday July 18th, 2025, surrounded by her loving husband, daughters, and other loved ones.
A service will be held 2 PM Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with burial at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Hamlin, Texas, on September 12, 1945, she was the beloved daughter of the late Jesse and Avis Garrett, with one sibling, Larry Garrett, who also preceded her in death.
Charlotte grew up surrounded by animals and nature on her family’s bucolic ranch outside of Breckenridge, Texas, which bred black angus cattle. Charlotte was involved in many beauty pageants, which were popular at the time, and won the State beauty contest. She was a proud graduate of Breckenridge High School and afterwards, attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her degree in Early Childhood Education and Home Economics.
After becoming an educator in the Texas school system, Charlotte went on to become an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church. There, she devoted her life to the children’s ministry. She founded and served as the director of the highly-esteemed Preschool, Mother’s Day Out, and Vacation Bible School programs at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin, working tirelessly over the years until her retirement 9 years ago.
In 1968, Charlotte married her husband of 57 years, John Delmo Matzinger, and became a loving mother to their two daughters, Amy (Jim) DeGroat and Joy (Jeff) Schranghamer, and beloved grandmother to two grandsons, Nash (Amy & Jim), and “little” John (Joy & Jeff).
Charlotte had a passion for family, fashion design, sewing, oil painting, and traveling the world with her family. She also enjoyed spending time in nature and with animals at the same family ranch her entire life. She and her husband, John, spent the beginning of her final days there before coming back home to Cedar Park for rest.
Her selfless generosity, compassion, love, and unique ability to beautify everything around her will be dearly missed.
