Allen Howell Cocanougher

October 20, 1928 — November 11, 2017

Decatur ~  Allen Howell Cocanougher, 89, went to be with our Lord, Saturday, November 11, 2017 in Decatur, Texas. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur.  Allen was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Funeral service is Monday 11:30 A.M., November 13, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur with Reverend Brian Bosworth officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 P.M. at Hawkins Funeral Home, Decatur.

On October 20,1928, Allen was born 5 miles north of Decatur on the family farm, to Glenn Howell Cocanougher and Gertrude (Mecaskey) Cocanougher. Allen attended and graduated from Decatur High School in 1945. He attended Decatur Baptist College and Texas A&M University.

Allen enlisted and served in the Special Veterinarian Corp of the U. S Air Force at Kimpo A.F.B., Korea during the Korean War.

Upon his return to civilian life, he married Sue Jean Roberts, who preceded him in death in 2011. They had been married for over fifty years.

After returning from his service in the Air Force, he began his career with Cocanougher Feed Company which he helped expand until being sold in 1994. At that time, Allen and his sons, co-founded Funimation Productions.  Funimation imported, distributed, and managed the television cartoon, “Dragon Ball Z” and other children’s programs. In 2005, he was instrumental in the family acquisition of several ranches in the Delaware Basin of West Texas. In recent years, he and his grandson, Bobby, invented and filed for a patent design which is a modification of the internal combustion engine.

Allen was a long-standing local benefactor.  He served on the board of the Wise Area Relief Mission, a local food bank.  He and Sue Jean provided financial support for many area youth to attend college to further their education.  He was a substantial supporter for the Decatur Community Hospital, which included the purchase of several dialysis machines.  He was helpful in acquiring the old TXU electric building which was refurbished into the Wesley Center for the youth and family of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur.  Anyone that came to him for any assistance, he would strive to find a way to help.

Allen was a fifty year member and a Master Mason at Decatur Lodge number 447 and was a member of the Scottish Rite. He was very active throughout his life. At 80 years, he won his division of the triathlon sponsored by Fit-N-Wise.

Allen is survived by two sons: Robert Cocanougher and wife, Deanya and Daniel Cocanougher and wife, Nola;  four grandchildren:  Jennifer Belle Cooper and husband, John; Robert Allen (Bobby) Cocanougher, Jr.; Danielle Marie Cocanougher; and Ellen Jean Cocanougher; three siblings: one brother Bonnie Glenn Cocanougher, and wife, Regina; and two sisters:  Dorothy Lynn Reid, and Marie Sue Murray; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Memorials may be made to Wise Area Relief Mission, the First United Methodist Church of Decatur or the Decatur Public Library.
