Sammy, my dear friend from the 1950's who is always in my mind although I lost touch with him as we both reached the age to take our life's winding roads. Sammy took me under his wing as a fledgling Star-Telegram delivery boy in Bridgeport. I rolled his papers for, maybe a dime, packed his newspaper bag, and walked his route with him which was straight up Halsell Street. Sammy walked his route, while others rode bicycles. He also introduced me to a habit which I eventually quit, As we walked that route he knew of a garage that we could hide behind and fired up what would be my first cigarette.
I have relived my life with his as I see the flattop haircut, the t-shirts rolled up, someone with a Bell bottom leisure suite and weddings and kids, parents, grandparents. etc. I see the presentation of his Purple Heart medal and swell with pride for him. You should always remember that he was an all American boy. A part of me has passed with Him, but you know what they say. No one is really gone until no one remembers him. I remember him!
