Sam was born on November 17, 1945, to Elliot and Martha (Burns) Betts in
Memphis, Tennessee. Sam was a retired film director in advertising, a novelist, musician, and comedian.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his sons, Josh Betts of
Richardson, Charlie Betts of Austin; his girlfriend, Joyce Stier of Decatur;
