Decatur ~ Felipe Nunez, 77, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2019 in Decatur

Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Father Reehan will officiate. Pallbearers include his grandchildren: Guirnalda Lopez, Juliana Lopez, Carlos Lopez, Christian R. Nunez, Guadalupe Nunez, and Eduardo Nunez.

Felipe was born on November 26, 1941 to Felipe and Santos (Lopez) Nunez in Santa Isabel Altamira, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His parents were Sr. Felipe Nunez and Sra. Santos Lopez who have passed.

Felipe came to Decatur in 1967 and worked at Tex Glass Factory. In 1968, he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked with Prestige Product Inc. which helped him achieve his legal residence on February 14, 1969.

At the end of 1969 he returned to Monterrey, Mexico to marry his now wife, Ernestina Galicia on December 13, 1969 then returning to Chicago. In 1970, he returned to Decatur, Texas with his wife and returned to working at Tex Glass which later closed. A company in Florida acquired the company and the name was changed to EMC Glass, he became Production Manager. In 1975, Felipe, his wife, and his daughters left for Mexico to try their fortune.

He founded an aluminum foundry which was not successful and in 1976 they returned to Decatur.

In 1976, thanks to the help of a friend, he started work at Mitchell Energy, working first on the oil rigs then later working as a switcher.

Felipe received his American Citizenship on September 2, 1997. In 1999, he retired from Mitchell Energy which later became Devon Energy.

In 2013, he retired completely from the oil and gas industries, having worked a total of 37 years.

During his retirement, he dedicated himself to his farm, El Refugio,

Felipe was a devoted catholic, and belong to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Decatur. He served the church as a construction committee member and him and his wife chaired the Quinceañera Education program for the three churches: Assumption, St. John the Baptizer in Bridgeport, and St. Mary in Jacksboro, for 21 years. They were also founders of the Quinceañera Education Program.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Emilia Sepulveda; and his brother, Mateo Nunez and wife Blanca.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Ernestina Nunez of Decatur; his daughters, Santos Cristina and wife Jehan of Ames, Iowa, Monica Lopez and husband Carlos of Decatur, and Alexandra Nunez-Austin and husband David of Decatur; 6 grandchildren, Guirnalda Lopez, Juliana Lopez, Carlos Lopez, Christian R. Nunez, Guadalupe Nunez, and Eduardo Nunez; numerous extended family and a host of friends.
